Interview: An audience with Jennifer Batten
   Picture the scene...
Superbowl XXVII, January 31st 1993. An audience of 90,000 fills the Rose Bowl in California. The Dallas Cowboys lead the Buffalo Bills 28-10 at halftime, and over 133 million Americans turn their attention to the true main event of the day – a live television appearance from the world's greatest living pop star. By the time the global viewing audience is factored in, the figures for those watching swell to incomprehensible numbers. With anticipation at fever pitch, one woman stands beneath the stage, alone with her guitar, ready to rock over 1.3 billion people around the world.
'That was the only time I ever saw Michael remotely nervous...'
Jennifer Batten has seen some sights during her remarkable career and the historic Superbowl show of 1993 remains a highlight.
The biggest gig of them all
  Gear: Michael Jackson? Nervous?
Jennifer Batten: 'Not during the performance itself, but in rehearsals he was a little bit...scatty (taps the side of her head and laughs). You had to really know what to look for to see it, and I had worked with him long enough by then to spot the signs. He didn't give a lot away, but that show was definitely a big deal, even for him.
Gear: 1.3 billion! That would have accounted for something like one in every five people on planet earth at the time.
JB: (laughs again) 'Oh, man, the crowds on the Dangerous tour were just unbelievable. You couldn't even imagine...I mean they were quite literally dangerous. All those people in one place, it was terrifying. I believe the biggest crowd we ever played to was here in England...in Liverpool, like 110,000 people.'
From small beginnings in her native New York, receiving a 'Beatlesy' electric guitar for Christmas aged 8 in 1967, Jennifer quickly took her first guitar lessons, before enrolling at the Guitar Institute of Technology in 1978. 'Oh, that place kicked my butt! You start there and there are pictures of Joe Pass and Pat Martino on the wall, and you're young, and you think you're pretty good - you think one day you'll be as good as your heroes...and of course you never get there...but hopefully you get somewhere close while developing your own thing along the way.'
The first ever female GIT graduate, the time spent honing her two-handed guitar skills eventually paid dividends when, in 1987, two decades since learning her first lick, Jennifer landed the biggest gig in music; lead guitar for Michael Jackson's Bad world tour.
The Good, the Bad and the Dangerous
Gear: Did Michael ever let you off the leash when it came to soloing, or did he have specific requirements for each song?
JB: Some of the time he left it open-ended. Y'know, I'd have 16 bars and I could play whatever the heck I wanted, play it different each night. But a lot of it was dictated by the audience, in actual fact. Take a song like 'Beat It', with Eddie's (Van Halen) wonderful solo - people wanted to hear that solo when they came to the show. So that one I wouldn't improvise, I'd play it the way Eddie played it on the record. And I can't complain about that.'
Jennifer went on to complete three world tours with Michael – Bad in '87-'89, Dangerous in '92-'93 and HIStory in '96-'97. 'With Michael, the shows were so big that we only ever played two or three nights a week, so I was fortunate enough to see a lot of the world while we were out on the road. We played just about everywhere and I had some wonderful experiences. And, y'know, it bought me a house too...(laughter).'
   When JB met JB
Amongst those experiences was a long-awaited encounter with her all-time guitar hero.
JB: 'We were due to be in London with the Dangerous tour in 1992, and Jeff Beck had called. He wanted to come along to the show. And then, what do you know, we got to London and the show was cancelled. So I was going out of my mind trying to get in touch with him. I was like 'Jeff Beck's gotta be somewhere in this country, and somebody must have a phone number or a way to get in touch with him!' Well eventually I did manage to track him down and later we spent three years on tour together.
Gear: As good as you imagined?
JB: Oh, just great. Jeff loves to party. He would always make sure we had two bottles of champagne and orange juice backstage!'
Gear: Were there any nerves for you, playing with such a big musical influence?
JB: 'Oh sure, a little at the start. But that's always the case when you play in front of people you admire, I think. In fact, I remember a show Jeff and I played where Steve Vai was in the audience, like three rows from the front, right in the centre. Can you imagine that, Vai watching your every move?!'
Gear: Jeff Beck usually talks more about his cars than his guitars; is he really as 'anti-guitar' as he makes out?
JB: 'Nooo. I mean he's not a guy that's going to sit down and work on scales, but he watches a lot of television and he's never without a guitar in his hands. He's always there, noodling, ready for inspiration to strike...and to watch him play is so educational. I had copped every solo from 'Blow by Blow' and 'Wired', but to see him playing them his way, the ways he gets around the instrument, you learn so much just from watching him.'
   The restless revolutionary
Jennifer has always sought out forward-looking gear to accommodate her innovative playing techniques. At the heart of her compact and portable guitar rig in 2018 is theBluGuitar AMP1, a unit she credits with 'changing everything.'
JB: You ask any guitar player who's tried carrying their favourite 100 watt amp up four flights of stairs to a show, you can fall out of love with an amp very quickly, no matter how good it sounds. But with this, the AMP1, it's a 100 watt tube head that you can put in your purse!'
Gear: How did you come to be involved with Thomas Blug and BluGuitar?
JB: Well I had met Thomas at trade shows, and I knew he was a lovely man and a fantastic guitar player, but I had no idea he was an inventor too. We got talking one time and he invited me to his house to try out this product he was working on. I walked into his living room and he just had every pedal ever made laid on the floor (laughter). And then he hands me this (the Amp1). I call Thomas Blug the Einstein of sound, because he thinks of everything. The Amp1 is a four channel, 100 watt tube-driven amplifier, with boost and reverb built in; it's even curved underneath so you can sit it on top of your speaker cabinet and the handle doesn't get in the way. From the first time I played through it I was just saying to Thomas 'I wannit, I wannit, gimme it, gimme it!' Gear: You think back 50 years, Hendrix and Cream rolling into town with four or five Marshall stacks, pedals the size of shoeboxes...it's only really in the last few years that companies seem to have said 'We could make this smaller, lighter and more user-friendly, without sacrificing the tone.' Why do you think it's taken guitar gear so long to shrink in size?
JB: I think a lot of it has to do with tradition, the name of a product, y'know, the brand – people think they need a certain amp because that's what their heroes played, way back when. But again, you try hauling a 4x12 speaker cabinet up stairs...and that's the amazing thing about the BluGuitar gear. Even the cabs, the Nanocab, theFatcab and this new Twincab, they're so light. And with this thing (picks up BluBoxspeaker simulator) you don't need even need a cab. I've arrived at a show before and they've not seen the rider, they don't have a 4x12 for me, so I've plugged straight into my BluBox, then into the desk, and it's saved my ass because it just sounds amazing. In fact, this is how much I love it - I recently gave away my collection of vintage microphones. That's how good it is.'
   The future of electric guitar
Jennifer's live show, like her particular brand of guitar genius, is typically idiosyncratic; her next level shredding combines with a constantly-shifting moving picture display, producing a relentless assault on the senses. 'I've definitely embraced the visuals,' Jennifer explains. 'In fact my last album was released as a DVD, so I'm really into the film-making...maybe even more so than the music now!'
However, with the promise of new and improved BluGuitar products arriving in the future, Jennifer won't be ditching guitar playing anytime soon.
JB: 'I haven't actually seen what Thomas is working on yet, but I know he's always thinking of new mods, always tweaking things, and whatever he does, you know it's going to be fantastic.'
Gear: And what of the calls on the internet for Herr Blug to produce a JB signature AMP1?
JB: Oh, listen, I have no interest in making a Jennifer Batten signature model...I'm perfectly happy with the current version, and whatever Thomas comes up with next, I'll be excited to hear how that sounds. Cos y'know, sound is everything.'
Amen to that.
Jennifer is currently touring the UK performing solo dates and clinics, in addition to appearing with top Michael Jackson tribute artist Navi. Visit her website and book tickets to see a bona fide guitar virtuoso in action.

The musical career of Uli spans an amazing five decades.
As an artist, Uli is a multi faceted phenomenon whose unique set of artistic talents has gained him an international reputation as a musical visionary and innovator.
As a teenagers Uli played in a number of bands in Hanover including Dawn Road while also studying classical guitar as well as the piano. His influences at that time were Andrés Segovia and Julian Bream, but also Flamenco guitarists like Manitas de Plata and the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin.
In the year 1973, Uli’s friend, Michael Schenker, quit the already established band Scorpions to join UFO in England. Michael asked Uli to take his place instead.
During his five year tenure as a member of Germany’s number one rock band, Uli built the foundation for his status of guitar legend and recorded five albums with the Scorpions gaining an international reputation as one of the most important innovators of the electric guitar.
Fly To The Rainbow (1974), In Trance (1975), Virgin Killer (1976), Taken by Force (1977) and a live album recorded in Japan in 1978 - Tokyo Tapes, that is generally recognised as one of the great live-albums in the history of rock music and has influenced scores of younger musicians.
His main ambition and driving force was the desire to become a better artist and all-round musician with the freedom to explore the realm of music in his own rather unconventional way and on his own terms, an approach which was not exactly mainstream, Uli felt increasingly stifled by the confinements of mainstream rock music which did not fit into the framework of the Scorpions.
In 1978, Uli made it clear to the band that this was to be his final tour as their lead guitarist.
Uli founded the band Electric Sun - initially designed as a three-piece outfit - in the tradition of Cream and Jimi Hendrix, that gave him greater artistic freedom.
The first album Earthquake - Although there was unmistakeable Hendrix in many of the songs, there were also distinctly classical leanings; this was particularly apparent in the title track, Earthquake - a ten minute instrumental epic - which presented a totally novel approach to guitar playing, regarded by many as an influential masterpiece and the new guitar techniques that were widely copied by younger guitarists and served as a blueprint for a novel, neo-classical guitar technique.
Beyond The Astral Skies. This album was another landmark that took electric guitar playing to yet another plateau of artistry.

It was around that time that Uli started using the Sky Guitar as his main guitar, which he designed and which featured a much extended fingerboard.
Uli began writing several large-scale pieces with the intention of merging the world of classical, or romantic concertos and symphonies with the unique voice and flair of the Sky Guitar, that it enables him to play in the highest registers of the violin range as well as those of the Cello. The first of this was an epic musical journey for Sky Guitar and symphony orchestra, aptly named Sky Concerto, which he began writing in the second half of 1987.
Uli was the first electric guitarist who had the vision and ability to significantly introduce a whole armoury of classical techniques towards the electric guitar, thus vastly expanding the hitherto somewhat limited technical vocabulary available on the guitar. Furthermore, Uli was the first guitar player in rock music who brought genuine classical know-how and virtuoso dexterity towards the instrument, a fact which has gained him the somewhat strange title of “father of neo-classical”. As early as 1976, Uli played fast and exciting diminished arpeggio runs during songs like Catch Your Train and the iconic Sails of Charon. This had never been heard before in rock music and many of Uli's ground-breaking techniques, his runs, phrasings, arpeggios - even dive bombs - became a blue-print and stepping-stone for legions of younger guitarists, who tried to emulate his style and ideas. This included younger players like Eddie van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, who - before embarking of successful careers of their own and becoming famous in their own right - have named him as a major influence.
In 1992, Uli wrote his first symphony, Europa Ex Favilla. In his live performances he included parts of Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, an organic mixture of classical and rock music.
Apart from his stature as one of the great innovators of the electric guitar, Uli Jon Roth also has gained a widely recognized reputation as one of the foremost - perhaps even the foremost - interpreters of the music of Jimi Hendrix.
After a thirteen year absence from touring, in 1998, Uli accepted an invitation by Joe Satriani to participate in a large-scale European tour of the G3 together with Michael Schenker.
In 2003, Uli recorded Metamorphosis of the Seasons in his studio in Aberystwyth, Wales. The album contains an ingenious version of the complete Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi as well as a new concerto, which Uli wrote as sort of a “fifth season”.
Uli has often been invited to spontaneous guest appearances with other artists. Over the years, Uli appeared and jammed several times with Deep Purple, The Smashing Pumpkins, Slash, Jack Bruce, Rick Wakeman, Michael Schenker, Paul Gilbert, Doro, Avantasia, Rachel Barton-Pine, Robbie Krieger, Leslie West, Gamma-Ray, Richie Kotzen, Angra, Gus G, UFO and many others.
In 2014, Uli became the annual patron of the premier guitar festival of France, Guitare-en-Scene, in St Julien-en-Genevois.
Those who have been lucky enough to witness Uli's live performances in recent years will testify that his concerts are an expression of the highest art of guitar playing and each onstage appearance by Uli Jon Roth is a unique occasion, because he always manages to create new magic on stage through his guitar playing and his inspiring persona. Uli is equally at home on stages of all sizes, from smaller, intimate venues such as clubs to stadiums and festivals and he always manages to captivate the attention of audiences all over the world by tapping into the very heart of music itself.
Uli met Thomas Blug a couple of times at trade shows. But when they played together at an all-Star-guitarplayer concert, Uli checked out the prototype of the BluGuitar AMP1. He discovered that he could get his signature tone of his Sky guitar cranked into a Plexi with no Mastervolume on the clean channel on the AMP1, and bought 5 AMP1 for himself and his band. These amps have been used in different setups all around the globe.

Ian Crichton is the guitarist of the Canadian progressive-pop-rock-band Saga. He is the younger brother of Jim Crichton, who plays bass in Saga. Ian was inspired by Queen and Jeff Beck. His unique style combines melodic lines with furious speedy runs that “ fly” over complex progressive soundscapes.
Another trademark of Saga are those virtuous dialogues with synth and keys.
Besides the guitar he also masters the bass. Ian Crichton is married to his wife Joy and es has 3 children together with her. Besides the albums withheld Saga he produced two solo albums. From 1997 to 1999 he was guitarist with Asia.
Ian tours the world with the AMP1 since 2016. His favorite channel is Classic - with and without boost. He pairs Clean with a Chorus pedal and occasionally uses Modern when he is in the mood for “more”.

Paul Rose, born in Newcastle, England in July 1966, is without doubt one of the most unique and talented guitarists in the world today. Fundamentally a rock guitarist, his extraordinary playing style touches on blues, country, jazz and folk, blended together into a style that is entirely his own. Never a gig goes by where audience members don’t comment that Paul is the best guitarist they’ve seen and heard.
Rory Gallagher awarded Paul a Fender ’62 Reissue Strat, with a Vox AC30, in a Fender sponsored competition that invited guitarists from all over the UK to appear in local music shops. Entrants were required to play in front of a video camera using the guitar and amp in question, without any pedals, to be edited and shown to Rory at a later date. Out of 1000 guitarists, Rory selected Paul as the winner and described him as ‘a hot player with a hot future.’ Having also won ‘Guitarist of the Year’ in Guitarist Magazine a couple of years later, it is plainly obvious that Paul is a force to be reckoned with.
Paul has worked as a producer/artist/session guitarist with Ted McKenna (drummer with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Rory Gallagher, Micheal Schenker, Bobby Womack), Gerry McAvoy (bassist with Rory Gallagher for 25 years), Randy Brecker (The Brecker Brothers), Bill Evans (tenor sax Miles Davis, Mick Jagger, Herbie Hancock, Derek Trucks) & John ‘Rabbit’ Bundrick (Free, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jon Martyn, Pete Townsend and 30 years with The Who) amongst others.
His last album ‘Double Life’ was recorded at the Steakhouse, Hollywood, CA which Paul co produced with multi Grammy award winner John Wooler (Gary Moore, Johnny Winter, john Lee Hooker, Albert Collins). The album featured Terry Evans on vocals (35 years with Ry Cooder), Richie Morales on drums (Al Demeola, The Brecker Brothers, Mike Stern), Randy Jacobs on rhythm guitar (Elton John, Kris Kristofferson, Was Not Was), Bernard Fowler lead vocals (backing vocals with the Rolling Stones for 25 years) & Sweat Pea Atkinson on vocals (Was Not Was, Lyle Lovett). The album received 5 star reviews across the board, and gig of the month for London during the album tour.
Paul has spent the last 18 months in the New York area playing with his US version of the Paul Rose Trio, featuring Richie Morales (Spyra Gyra, Al Demeola, The Brecker Brothers) and Mark Egan (Pat Metheny Group, David Sanborn, Gil Evans). With a weekly residency at the Bitter End in Greenwich Village and gigs at the Iridium and B. B. Kings.

Recognized as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation in the heavy metal heaven that is Finland, Valovirta has starred in numerous domestically praised bands such as Godsplague and Drive. His first taste of international renown Euge got as the guitarist of Suburban Tribe, but the easygoing bloke that he is, for the longest time he has happily settled into his role and garnered accolades as the ace hired hand on the albums of metal luminaries like Children Of Bodom, Heavysaurios, Kiuas and others too many to mention. Valovirta finally started to get international fame as the guitarist of the Swedish masters of darkness, Shining, where he worked alongside with Niklas Kvarforth as song-writing partners between 2010-2017.
Nowadays manning the lead guitar of skyrocketing Swedish melodic metal band Cyhra and his groovy - metal project Red Wolf, Valovirta feels this is the opportune time to unleash his second solo album ‘Shooting From The Hip’. The album has 10 songs of guitar driven instrumentals from Van Halen - style 80’s rock, “Hillbilly” - chicken pickin' fireworks to groovy kind of metal and one ballad dedicated to all our absent friends. Valovirta wrote the songs, played & programmed all the instruments and mixed & mastered the album so ‘Shooting From The Hip’ is a solo album in the true sense of the word.

Musician, composer, arranger and bandleader. Edison was musical arranger for the West End musical “Unforgettable” and was musical director on the show’s international tour. He has composed music for BBC Radio 4 performed with The Jazz Warriors, as well as various other artists.
Edison took part in the Sky Arts series Guitar Star, where he performed one of his original compositions for George Benson. Benson commented: “You played the crap out of that!” The two musicians have stayed in touch, and George continues to mentor Edison. Singer songwriter Lianne La Havas jammed with Edison on the same show and she described him as “mega talented”.
Edison heads up a trio featuring Neville Malcom on double bass and drummer Winston Clifford. In 2015 Edison was sponsored by the Arts Council to tour with their first album “My Favourite Tunes”.
Edison’s most recent album, “Time for Love”, was sponsored by The Arts Council. It’s a change of direction with an exciting new band line up and an eclectic mix of original compositions and popular covers, and is out now!
Edison recently discovered the AMP1 Mercury Edition, which was love at first chord! He says: “I was searching for an amp that was portable and that gave a great sound. I tried many different amps and then stumbled upon AMP1 by BluGuitar. I was amazed that such a small amp could be so warm and versatile! I used this amp on my last recording and just love the rich tone I get from it.”

Since 1987, Lars Johansson has been lead guitarist with Candlemass, the heaviest doom metal band to ever come out of Sweden.
Born and raised in the north of Sweden, Lars started playing guitar at the age of 12, being influenced at that time by – among others – Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Jeff Beck and Leslie West. Lars later moved out to the south of Sweden to get serious with music, and, after two years in Stockholm, he met the other guys from Candlemass.
Since then, the band has released 11 studio albums, five live albums, four DVDs and a bunch of other stuff to huge global success. On top of that, Lars has also released some music on his own under names like Zoic, Creozoth and Fat.Mo.Mac. Candlemass has toured Europe, North and South America in its time, and these days concentrates on playing the world’s largest festivals.
Lars is well known for his fluid and aggressive yet sensitive style with a magic mix of classical and bluesy playing.

Uli Brodersen, a guitarist from Saarlouis/Germany fuses smooth and funky jazz guitar with beats from hip-hop and pop music.
Brodersen started on the Archtop-Jazz Guitar and was already playing in jazz bands at the age of 14. In the mid-90s, his style was heavily influenced by the acid jazz movement. You can hear this influence clearly on his debut album "The Journey". Another strong influence shaping Uli's style are the albums of smooth jazz guitar legend Chuck Loeb.
Apart from his own productions, Uli Brodersen's playing can be heard on the albums of smooth jazz pianist Amandus and many other artists.
